In 2020, Dr. Cook embarked on a mini-fellowship that focused on specialized training in
pediatric primary mental health disorders. This invaluable experience has equipped her
with the expertise to address the pressing demand for pediatric mental health treatment.
Dr. Cook strives to help her young patients gain access to appropriate care for primary
mental health disorders. She firmly believes in taking a holistic approach, emphasizing
the significance of addressing the physical and social aspects of mental health care
alongside medication and therapy. After a thorough assessment, medical concerns
contributing to mental health issues will be addressed. If appropriate, Dr. Cook
incorporates natural remedies along with low doses of psychotropic medications if
necessary, and diligently monitors her patients throughout their treatment journey.
Dr. Cook currently provides diagnosis and treatment for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression and aggression. She also provides screening for mood disorders.
At the first visit, you can expect a comprehensive history and physical examination of your child. Dr. Cook will provide your family with appropriate objective screening tools. Due to the nature of the comprehensive history and physical, Dr. Cook will be able to determine if any additional medical diagnostics are needed to aid in your child's diagnosis and assess their mental health needs. Dr. Cook will order laboratory tests to make sure there are no further medical problems to be addressed. These laboratory values will also be reviewed to ensure there are no contraindications to psychotropic medications.
The second visit will be to review the objective screening, tools, laboratory values and medical diagnostics that have been performed. Dr. Cook will discuss whether or not your child meets criteria for a particular medical diagnosis. You will then be provided with the diagnosis and discuss recommended treatment options. Dr. Cook is a parent and understands the value of parental input when it comes to their child's medical care. Rest assured, no medical treatment will be started without full parental consent. Please also keep in mind, not all children with a mental health diagnosis require medication. Dr.Cook will also refer to a therapist if your child's diagnosis would benefit from regular therapy services.
Dr. Cook recognizes that all medications have benefits and risks, and these will be thoroughly discussed with you. Future visits will document your child's progress with the chosen treatment protocol, side effects of treatment, and a focused physical exam.
